Priority

I randomly picked up the book from Crossword-Ahmedabad while I was visiting India.
Book name is " Who will cry when u die" and author is Robin Sharma.
Book title really striked me, author's previous book " Monk who sold his Ferrari" also I
found thought provoking. Without any hunch I just bought this book.

As usual I am not going to write quotes or some nice sentences from this book. I would just
suggest to read this book since its a very small book with the time frame of two hours.
Book is not atall related with death. Robin Sharma has described 101 topics to improve
your life.Although this book touched me very deeply and made me introspect myself. I really
luved one story from this book. Story is on priority and importance of priority.

Its a story of an old lighthouse keeper. The man had only a limited amount of oil to keep
his beacon lit so that passing ships could avoid the rocky shore. One night, a man who
lived close by needed to borrow some of this precious commodity to light his home. so the
lighthouse keeper gave him some of his own. Another night, a traveler begged for some oil
to light his lamp so he could keep on traveling. The lighthouse keeper also complied
with this request and gave him the amount he needed. The next night, the lighthouse keeper was
awakened by a mother banging on his door. She prayed for some oil so that she could illuminate
her home and feed her family. Again he agreed. Soon all oil was gone and his beacon went out.
Many ships ran aground and many lives were lost because the lighthouse keeper forgot to
focus on his priority. He neglected his primary duty and paid a high price.

We all are very good humans and we always complied by other people pain. But at same time,
we have to focus our own priority before we misdirect the boat of our own life.

Dhirubhaism

The Bhagvad Gita says,” The actions of a great man are an inspiration for others.Whenver he does become a standard for others to follow.” What example can be better than Dhirubhai Ambani for this sentence? Man of the decades and man of the era.

We all know about this man but there is never enough. We read books and we watch his movie but I always feel that there is something more to explore about him. There are still more qualities about him which are hidden. His story about his success and entrepreneurship is known to each child of India.Borned at Chorwad, Gujarat and left home at the age of 17, to work at A.Bese & Co at Aden. After 9 years he returned to India and set up Reliance. Starting from the small factory at Naroda, Ahmedabad then Vimal and Reliance that shows an extraordinary vision. He was neither an MBA nor an economist. Simple middle class guy who faced all the obstacles and proved to the world that “No is no answer!”

In early eighties when high fashion was a distant to the world he opened Vimal’s showroom in the whole country. He became the creator of India’s largest private sector company. The man had lot of extraordinary qualities and one of them I believe his people skill. He was a friend of everybody. Starting from the regular worker of Reliance to the Parliament. He treated his engineers, mangers and workers so well. He always believed Reliance is a reflection of the talent of her people and workers. The way he believed in abilities of his people the way parent does in his own child which requires lot guts and trust. Philanthropy was his another quality which is not publicly associated to him. He helped out an acquaintance who was indebted to him could not repay the money because he had a drinking problem. Instead of writing him off, Dhirubhai doubled the loan so that he could recover from his losses, straighten himself out when he realized the gravity of his plight and become self-sufficient to repay the entire amount. All these acts of kindness were quietly, silently and efficiently executed. No pomp and ceremony preceded or followed these gestures. In fact, most of his beneficiaries were not even aware of that.

There is lot more to talk about his vision, entrepreneurship, confidence, street smartness, people skill, philonthripy and which is never enough. I am mentioning his few quotes here. I have shared a lot of this information from the book “Dhirubhaism” which is written by A.G.Krishnamurthy.

“Money is not a product itself. It is a by-product, so don’t chase it”.

“Think big, think fast, and think ahead. Ideas are no one’s monopoly”.

“If you work with determination and with perfection, success will follow.”

“Purse your goals even in the face of difficulties, and convert adversities into opportunities.”

“For those who dare to dream, there is a whole world to win. Dream and dare”.

“Don’t give up. Courage is my conviction”.

Freakonomics

I have been slacking at blogging but here I m with new one.Feakonomics name itself is so different. When I came to know about this book the name made me very curious. I studied economics enough but what is this? I started reading this book and got very amazed by authors Steven D Levitt and Stephen J Dubner thought process. Every page made me more inquisitive and I ended up finishing this book so quickly. All chapters in this book are related to day to day life. Chapters like parenting effects on chidren, crack dealers economics, the socioeconomic patterns of naming children are written with clear, readily understandable language and with best description I've ever seen of regression analysis and correlation. The topics discussed are quite interesting - why crime REALLY went down in the 90's, the impact parents can REALLY have on their kids, and pools are more dangerous than guns. Using the statistics of annual child death by these two means, Levitt attempts to assert that death by swimming is more a threat than death by accidental gunfire. I found the authors' insight on baby name data and on the correlations between parenting activities & children's academic success fascinating. Levitt/Dubner present complex ideas in the most straight forward, enlightening way possible. His most controversial claim, the linkage of legalized abortion in the United States and the drop in the crime rate, is a powerful example of how new methods of collecting and combining data can drive astonishing results. These are only some of the questions addressed in this book. The conclusions will surprise you and in the case of the crime drop, it might even shock you. The authors really don't follow any particular theme and readers could open up the book on any chapter without feeling lost.  In short this book is very entertaining and thought provoking. The reader is encouraged to open his/her mind, and after poring through so many examples. I don't know you will believe everything he said, but he certainly makes you think more creatively. Here is the link.

LONG TAIL

I am reading "The Long Tail" book from Chris Anderson..I am half way right now...He is talking about few sites like Rhapsody,Wikipedia and Google.Book is more about how internet caught business.I cannot say much right now coz I am half way..But I really liked what he wrote about google.I am a big fan of google and hope you will like it.

"The Web naturally has a certain grain, and google is aligned with it.That's why their success so effortless. They're sailing with the wind, instead of sitting becalmed praying for a business model, like the print media,or trying to tack upwind by suing their customers, like Microsoft and the  record labels.Google doesn't try to force things to happen their way. They try to figure out whats' going to happen, and arrange to be standing there when it does".
